Efficient management of forest resources is crucial in reducing poverty and the prevention of illegal logging. Finland contributed to the development of a national forest management information system in Vietnam through FORMIS – project. The project was funded by Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and administered by NIRAS Finland. The owner of the Information System was Vietnam Administration of Forestry (VNFOREST), which is a close equivalent to Metsähallitus in Finland.
The first phase of the project, FORMIS I, took place in 2009-2013 and the work continued in 2014-2018 in the FORMIS II. The full time staff consisted of four Finnish forestry experts and circa 40 Vietnamese experts.
Our GIS Expert Kari Mikkonen worked in the FORMIS project right from the beginning of the first phase in 2009. Kari spent 2-3 months/year in the project’s central office in Hanoi to provide technical assistance and consulting on the development of the Forest Resource Management Information System.
The FORMIS system consists of different components the most essential being the Forest Resource Database and the utilizing SOA platform, web- and desktop interfaces as well as tools for reporting and data validation.
